Description
Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analog of alpha-MSH that non-selectively activates melanocortin receptors MC1R through MC5R, engaging pigmentation (MC1R), and central nervous system melanocortin pathways (MC3R/MC4R) simultaneously. It served as the parent compound from which the more receptor-selective PT-141 (bremelanotide) was later derived. Published research has characterized its receptor binding kinetics, cAMP signaling activation, and — in early clinical studies of the parent research program — dose-dependent pigmentation and neurophysiological effects; separate preclinical work has also examined anti-neoplastic activity in melanoma cell models.
